The Lesser Known Benefits of Stability Training
Stability plays a huge role in our everyday lives – from getting out of bed, going up and down the stairs, or bending over to tie a shoelace. It also plays an important role in building strength or losing weight. Good stability prevents muscle imbalances, which may lead to injuries.
This is when stability training comes in. Here are the benefits of stability training that you might not know, and examples of stability exercises you could do for it!
What is stability training?
Stability is the ability to control body position through movement. When your entire body is in sync, it is easier for your bones, ligaments, and muscles to work together.
For most of us, stability training probably takes a back seat to other types of training. Little did we know, it’s actually the most important part. Without it, the risk of future injuries will be through the roof.
The Lesser Known Benefits of stability training:
1. Builds better posture
It is easy to forget that posture is all about full body stability. Improving your stability is the key for a good posture. It helps keeps a more upright position – whether you are just sitting at your desk or you are being active.
One stability exercise that you could do to improve your posture is the wall sit:
- Put your back against the wall with your knees at a 90-degree angle.
- Focus on keeping your head, your shoulders, your back, and your glutes flat against the wall throughout the exercise.
- Keep your core engaged throughout the exercise.
- Hold for 60 seconds.
Good posture is a prevention tool for back pain. However, if you are already experiencing any kind of pain, a back brace could be the best solution.
Made of almost a century of engineering and research, Bauerfeind provides the highest quality back braces available. The LumboTrain Back Brace are designed to provide stability and support while allowing full range of motion, along with pain relief.

2. Help prevent falls
When you have good stability, you adapt to changes in body position much faster, saving you from falling into unwanted situations such as slipping on a wet floor.
A stability exercise that you could do to prevent a fall is the sit to stand exercise.
- Sit on a stable chair, with your foot firm on the ground.
- When going to the standing position, lean your body forward to shift your body weight forward.
- Slowly rise to a stable standing position.
- Slowly return to a stable sitting position.
- Repeat 10 times.
3. Improve joint stability
It is important for everyone, especially people with arthritis, to take care of their joints.
Common injuries that may occur because of unstable joints includes ankle sprains and ACL tears. This type of training not only promotes the stability of your joints, but also helps strengthen them.
A stability exercise that you could do to improve joint stability is the step up and step down exercise.
- Find a bench. When you place your foot on it, your knees bend to a 90 degree angle.
- Press through the heel of your left foot as you step on to the bench, bringing the right foot on to the bench, so you are standing on the bench.
- Press through the base of your right foot as you step off the bench, bringing the left foot on to the floor, so you are standing on the floor.
- Repeat 15 times.
Whether your training goal is to lose weight, increase strength, or to just be fit, any proper training should incorporate all aspect of fitness, which includes stability training.
