HOW AM I ABLE TO PREVENT OR AVOID AN ANKLE INJURY WHEN I AM PLAYING NETBALL?

Constant running, jump landings and fatigue from netball can increase your risk of injury. Some netballers also suffer from unstable ligaments and tendons that support the ankle. Wearing a Bauerfeind brace or ankle support can reduce your chances of injury through enhanced stability, proprioception and medical-grade compression.

Some of the most common forms of injury when playing netball include ligament tears and sprains, Achilles tendonitis, and inflammation. Bauerfeind ankle braces help to promote blood flow with medical-grade compression, something not found when using simple neoprene sleeves and braces.

A particularly effective ankle brace for netball includes the MalleoTrain S ankle brace as an alternative to strapping. This added support will help stabilise your joint without limiting your ability to run down a court or score your next goal.

SHOULD I WEAR AN ANKLE BRACE WHEN PLAYING NETBALL?

One of the most common injuries in netball is an ankle injury. Risk factors include previous ankle injuries, landing on another player’s foot, incorrect footwear, and poor proprioception. An ankle brace can provide external support to decrease the risk of injury and provide protection.

HOW TO TREAT COMMON ANKLE INJURIES FROM NETBALL

    • Strains or Sprains. Many sprains and strains can be treated with the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. A good physiotherapist can assist with recovery; however, prevention is always better than a cure.
    • Ligament Tearing. Ligament tears generally always require surgery. A torn ligament rebuild uses tissue graft, as the ligament will not typically heal properly. Surgery is minimally invasive; however, it can take time for the tear to heal.
    • Achilles Tendonitis. Symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis, such as pain and swelling above the heel, often occur in people who have hiked for prolonged periods due to constant loading on the ankle. Adequate rest and non-surgical treatments can relieve these symptoms.
