Shoulder Abduction Workout for Rotator Cuff Strength and Rehabilitation

The rotator cuff comprises several muscles that support, stabilise, and help move your shoulder joint. Keeping it strong and healthy with exercises like resisted shoulder abduction will minimise your risk of injury and assist in recovery. See how to do shoulder abduction below.

The benefits of resisted shoulder abduction

Resisted shoulder abduction is an exercise that strengthens and stabilises the rotator cuff muscles. It also works the upper back and core, albeit to a lesser extent.

It’s a great addition to an upper-body workout routine. It can also help rehabilitate your shoulder after an injury or surgery, especially if the joint lost some strength and mobility during recovery. With a stronger rotator cuff, your shoulder will be more prepared for weightlifting workouts and be less prone to injury and re-injury.

How to do the resisted shoulder abduction exercise

  • While standing up straight, stand on one end of a resistance band and hold the other in your hand.
  • Slowly raise your arm out to the side until the wrist is slightly above the shoulders. Your arm should be slightly bent and your wrist straight.
  • Pause briefly at the top of the motion, then slowly lower your arm back down to your side.
  • Keep your spine neutral throughout the exercise
  • Repeat for 15 reps in 3 sets.
  • If the exercise is too difficult or too easy, you can experiment with bands with greater or lesser resistance. You can also increase or decrease the number of reps and sets you do.
